Army Pup Tent

The army pup tent has been conscripted into military service since the American Civil War. During World Wars I and II, it saw action in the battlefields of Europe and Asia, and it continued to do so in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Today, it is in Iraq, Afghanistan, and perhaps a few other countries where there are U.S. troops.

This sturdy shelter consists of two halves, each measuring approximately seven feet long and five feet wide. The halves are joined together with buttons up to the World War II, but these were eventually replaced by two-sided snaps. Poles, ropes, and stakes come with the tent to hold it up. The two halves were meant to be carried by two soldiers to limit the carrying load of each.

During World War II, the shelter was made of cotton duck material and came with wooden stakes. Today they are made of cotton sateen fabric and the stakes are now made of stamped aluminum.

Civilians can buy authentic GI issue shelters at surplus shops at low prices. These are as good as any non-military tent available in the market.
